Fiona Mackechnie
Fiona graduated from Art College with a B.A. Degree in Printed Textiles. She worked as a freelance designer for the fabric market on leaving college, and some years later formed a business silk screen printing on shower curtains, tiles and fabrics for interiors.
This business led onto the development if a new business – China Ocean Tableware, which designs and produces fine bone china tableware for the private individual and corporate and retail market. Last year, she designed a dinner service for a private yacht based in Monaco and has supplied corporate companies and a hotel with their own bespoke tableware.
Fiona first visited Barbados some 18 years ago when her cousin married a Barbadian. Having been brought up as a child in Borneo, the tropical splendor of Barbados had a profound effect on her, as she has always loved exotic environments. She fell in love with the island and has been a constant visitor.
A few years ago, one of her good friends owned the Ocean View Hotel, which at the time was the oldest hotel on the island. A mural project was created by Fiona in the crystal room. She used local flora as her inspiration and exotic friezes were painted around the room. This project kick-started a love of painting the tropical beauty of the island with its cheeky green monkeys, in acrylics and watercolours, as well as murals. She currently commutes between Scotland and Barbados and has developed a beautiful range of fine bone china tableware, based on the green monkey and the night skies of Barbados.
Fiona feels it is a privilege to come and paint in Barbados, to meet the local people and to enjoy a now ever-increasing circle of friends.
